At Autumn's Harvest Farm we raise Large Black Pigs on pasture as well as in woodlots. After raising a number of different Heritage breeds we finally settled on Large Black Pigs. We found Large Black pigs to be docile and easier to work with than some of the other breeds we tried to work with. We also found them well suited for our pasture -based farming operation due to their strong foraging and grazing abilities. Large Black Pigs are most recognizable by their size, black skin (which helps protect them from sunburn) and oversized ears. We have found their oversized ears one of their best attributes as they are often covering their eyes which keep them slower moving and much calmer. The large ears also are known to protect their eyes when grazing or foraging around the woods.
Our pig breeding program started in 2001. From the beginning we put an emphasis on choosing our stock by their ability to thrive on pasture and in woodlots. In addition we only chose sows that exhibit exemplary maternal instinct and displayed the ability to farrow naturally outdoors. Our pigs have outdoor access year round and our supplemented with non GMO grains sourced locally using a number of rations that were developed on the farm all of which are free from antibiotics. Years of careful breeding and allowing our pigs to live outdoors in ways that mimics nature has allowed us to create exquisite pork that is moist, flavorful and has marbling which rivals the finest of beef.
